Disclaimer and Privacy Policy

What data are collected, how it is collected, how it is used:

  1. Personally identifiable information: No personal identifiable information will be collected in the app, and the anonymity of the users will remain protected.

  2. Exercise completion: On a daily basis, the user may select whether or not they completed each exercise in their list. This data is used by their physiotherapist to determine if the user is completing their exercises regularly. An email notification will be sent to the caregivers email account as a summary to determine if the user is completing their exercises regularly. The email address of the caregivers will be encrypted.

  3. Step counts & Active minutes: Step counts and active minutes, as measured by the user's Fitbit device, are retrieved from Fitbit’s server. Please visit Fitbit’s privacy policy to get more information on what data are collected, how it is collected, and used:  https://www.fitbit.com/ca/privacy. This data is used by their physiotherapist to determine if the user is walking enough during the week.

How we store the information?

We value user’s confidentiality and is committed to protecting all your information. Therefore, extensive technical and administrative measures have been put in place to ensure the security and safety of your data.

  1. OTAGO App: The data collected from the OTAGO App are stored in a database hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), which is a cloud-based service, with datacenters in the USA, which more details can be found here:  https://aws.amazon.com/?nc2=h_lg. Only authorized personnel can access the database and all access will be tracked and documented.

  2. Fitbit Account: Fitbit stores collected data and uses it according to their privacy policy. Please see this link for more information:  https://www.fitbit.com/ca/privacy.

Data collected in this study from the OTAGO App will be securely stored for 5 years after publication of the findings, which is consistent with the University of British Columbia’s policy requirements.

How a user can revoke consent or request deletion

Users have provided consent for the collection of this data through the study's consent form. Users may withdraw from the study at any time without giving reasons. If the user chooses to enter the study and then decide to withdraw at a later time, they have the right to request the withdrawal of their information collected during the study. This request will be respected to the extent possible. Please note however that there may be exceptions where the data will not be able to be withdrawn; for example, where the data are no longer identifiable (meaning they cannot be linked in any way back to the person’s identity) or where the data have been merged with other data. Changes to our privacy policy

We reserve the right to revise this privacy policy at any time and will notify users on its platforms (app and website). We will not reduce your rights or make any changes that will compromise your contribution without your consent in accordance with applicable law. Changes related to how we use the information provided by the user will be relayed to you through the email provided. Therefore it is the user’s responsibility to have given accurate and up to date contact information or to visit the website regularly to check for any changes. Prior versions of the privacy policies will be kept for your review.
